1. What is included in the program cost?
• Daily dance masterclass session fees with Destino Dance Company (3 to 5 hours/day)
• Cultural tours and fun activities
• Access to exclusively engage and experience artist venues including intimate local artist hangouts and invitation to the US Embassy dance showcase
• Ethio-arts lecture and discussion from other artists and academics
• Accommodation (bed & breakfast) for one week
• All meals (lunch & dinner), except extra snacks, drinks and alcohol
• In country travel & transportation costs
• Shama Arts provides financial compensation to Ethiopian artists for their social project
2. Should I prepare dance choreography for the trip?
We advise all participants to prepare a solo (5 min max.), as well as ideas for group improvisations, learning and collaborations. We will share more details with you through your personal information package.
3. Where does the program primarily take place?
We will largely be based in Ethiopia's capital city, Addis Ababa.
4. How many people will be on the program?
5 participants per program in order to keep high quality and strong relationships built with the local artists.
5. Which airport should I fly into?
Please search for international flights to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD). From London Heathrow Ethiopian Airlines is usually the most direct flight, around 7h15 min. From the East Coast of the United States flying from Washington DC is a direct flight to Addis Ababa for 13h15 min. Flying from NYC, Newark and Philadelphia you can stop in Europe or Qatar/ Dubai at lower costs. Feel free to reach out to us directly and we can help you find the most affordable flights.
6. Is Ethiopia safe?
Safety is our priority. Our team ensures a safe environment properly vets all program locations and lodging. If there are petty crimes, our team will always communicate safety protocols with our participants. We will provide you with a full information package with all necessary medical, safety and essential information. Both founders of the program have lived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for multiple years and have known Destino Dance Company for over 5 years.
7. What immunizations do I need?
Please see your doctor for updated routine vaccinations, and consult the Shama Arts team for information regarding additional vaccinations needed for Ethiopia, including Hepatitis and Yellow fever. Malaria medication is not required as the program will not be held in malaria prone areas.
8. How much is the program fee?
Apply by April 14th for your early bird fee: $972 USD ( £790 GBP)
The program includes all meals, accommodation, in country cultural activities and artist exchanges and generous financial compensation to Destino Dance Company for providing the daily (3-5 hours) of masterclass sessions. 9. What is not included in the program fee?
Airfare and tourist visa fee ($50) are not included, as well as spending money for souvenirs and additional snacks and drinks. Personal travel insurance is not included and is mandatory to join the program. To ensure you secure the best airfare, please contact us directly and we can help you find the most affordable flight to and from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.
10. What are my payment options?
We are happy to discuss a payment plan, and there are two options to pay: Option 1. Paying with a credit card, debit card- Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards all accepted to our external payment site when accepted to the program

11.What about travel insurance?
We require each traveler to obtain his/her own travel insurance for the duration of the program.
12. How can I fundraise for the ticket?

13. Do I need a visa?
Yes, you can gain a tourist visa (one-month, single entry) on arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) for US and UK citizens. Tourist visa on arrival costs $50 (to be confirmed with Shama Arts team as visa fees can change).
14. What will the accommodation be like?
We will be staying in a safe and central guesthouse in Addis Ababa, with two participants per room. The guesthouse is close to our workshop venue and offers included services such as breakfast, wifi, hot water and comfortable lounge areas.
15. What is the food like in Ethiopia?
We will be having breakfast at the guesthouse every morning, then lunch and dinner at restaurants. We will go to a variety of restaurants including traditional Ethiopian serving the delicious Injera (soft sourdough flatbread which serves as the “spoon” for lentil, bean, meat, and vegetable sauces piled on top), but also Mediterranean, Indian, Italian. Addis Ababa offers an amazing variety of choice and we are happy to help you discover the rich tastes of the local Ethiopian cuisine. Options are available for vegans, vegetarians and any dietary restrictions.
16. How much spending money should I bring with me?
We suggest you bring $200 USD (or £165 GDP) dollars with you for snacks, additional drinks, and souvenirs you may want to purchase.
17. Do I need to have currency converted prior to arriving?
Ethiopia's local currency is the Ethiopian Birr (ETB). You will have the opportunity to exchange or withdraw local currency upon arriving. We highly recommend you inform your credit and debit card provider of upcoming travels and have a minimum amount of cash with you. US Dollars and Euros are easy to exchange in the capital Addis Ababa.
